Facebook Password Reset Scam

Facebook Virus

Looks like the Facebook infection count is about to rise again..
Most of you have probably already heard about some sort of Facebook worm or infection over the course of the past year. We've had several systems come through our shop bearing the mark of W32/Koobface.worm or some other variant. Some have clicked on a mysterious message regarding pictures of them doing something naughty, others have done nothing more than visit the page and became a victim by simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Our friends over at Technibble sent us a message this morning of a new Facebook threat involving a password reset email. Don't get me wrong, we enjoy the income produced by virus and spyware removal, however, we would rather educate where we can and prevent people from having to go through the technical nightmare, not to mention financial nightmare, of having their system properly cleaned of a nasty infection, preferably without data loss. that said, here's an excerpt from Technibble's bulletin this morning:

A fake Facebook password reset email seems to be doing the rounds in the last few days. I fixed two computers today that had been infected by this particular malware. The Facebook password reset email says the following:

Subject: Facebook Password Reset Confirmation! Customer Support

Dear user of Facebook,

Because of the measures taken to provide safety to our clients, your password has been changed. You can find your new password in attached document.

Thanks,
Your Facebook.

Instead of having a fake Facebook page to collect the victims passwords (phishing), the email is sent with a malware attachment. The malware is known as “Bredolab” which is a Trojan downloader. In the two computers I repaired today, Bredolab downloaded some rogue antivirus products. However, some sites are saying that it also downloads a password stealing trojan.

Beware, true believers... Give us a call if you run into a problem. We're definitely prepared to clean up the mess, but as I said, if you can avoid the mess altogether, its a win for everyone.

God bless,

-myk
