It's been a while since we last spoke. Like many, we have had a busy summer both with work and with enjoying time with our families. Everyone deserves a break, but it's time to get back on the horse and provide you with all the geeky information you've come to love us for :)
Not too long ago, I spoke with some local business owners and the topic of QR codes came up. Until recently, this type of technology was reserved for the UPS delivery person to track packages, and that's about it.. With the increased adoption of smartphones for "regular" people, barcode scanners exist in the pockets of most consumers. Because of this, advertisers have begun using cryptic messages to send people of virtual scavenger hunts to find special offers and easter eggs using QR codes.
A quick response code, or QR code, in its simplest form, is a type of barcode that can be configured to deliver specific content to a smartphone or smart device such as an Android, Apple, Windows, or Blackberry smartphone or tablet. These devices are able to download an application from the appropriate app store (note to apple: please do not attempt to sue us for the use of the word app store in this article) that allows a built-in camera to read these codes and convert them to the appropriate message it was designed to deliver. A practical use for these codes can be to allow users to access a hidden portion of a website by scanning the barcode with their mobile phone. This practice is used heavily in advertising. I commonly see people scanning posters at the movie theater in order to see additional information about an up and coming movie. This makes accessing content from mobile devices much quicker that typing in a long web address.
So how can one take advantage of such alien technology? Isn't this costly?
Not at all.. The barcode scanner applications are available for free on mobile devices. You don't even need any special software to generate the codes. I generated the one at the top of this article by visiting http://www.qurify.com/. You can make the code either to display a special message or to link to any website of your choice. So get creative and crank out a few codes today to post on your own blog, or to include in printed materials to offer special promotions to scan-happy customers!
It's good to be back! Keep checking back for more frequent updates. ..and no, I don't apologize at all for enjoying the summer...
God bless,
-myk
