What to Consider Before Purchasing Cat Carriers
Whenever a cat owner is bound to travel, carriers are one of the things that they think of especially if they intend to bring their cats with them. If you are one of those cat owners then there are certain things that you have to remember before shopping for a cat carrier.
The most important consideration when buying a cat carrier is the level of comfort your cat will feel. The size of the cat carrier you intend to purchase is vital. It is important that your pet is able to lie down and stand on the carrier with ease. It is also vital that they are able to stretch and move their limbs. Another thing that you have to consider is the surface of the carrier; it must be comfortable enough and will not irritate the skin or fur of your cat once in contact with it.
If you are bound to travel by plane then you must go for those hard kennels. But of course, for other modes of transportation you can just purchase those soft or a wicker carrier.
If you will need to travel for several hours then you will need to purchase the carrier ahead of time and start placing the cat so that they’ll be accustomed in using it. You can try placing them in the carrier for a couple days before the trip, perhaps for several minutes each day. As the owner, you have to make sure they don’t panic while they are put inside the kennel or carrier. The main purpose aside from getting them acquainted with the entire setup is to make sure they will not feel terrified when placed in the carrier for a number of hours.
For those who are using a hard carrier, they can try putting a mat on the surface of the kennel. This will make them more at ease while on a trip. Another perks of doing the latter is that you will not feel problematic in cleaning their mess. It is also a good addition to use a cloth or foam on the carrier.
You must also see to it that the carrier don’t smell awful, perhaps you can add some light scent so as not to make your cat feel uncomfortable with the smell. If you will travel by bus or by a car then you have to spray some light scent in the carrier.
It is very important on your part to put a name and contact information in the carrier or on the cat’s collar just in case you accidentally lost your cat.
It is also important that the kennel is locked and secured. For those who will travel by plane, the flight personnel will be the one who will make sure it’s locked but if you will not travel by plane then you’ll have to do this one.
